Earth Justice is leading a lawsuit against Florida DEP to protect springs. Since the underwhelming Florida legislature deliberately subverted the springs bill and its protections, well be following this administrative process with great interest - the MFL (minimum flows & levels) issue is central to Florida finally stepping up to protect Florida springs and stop the gush of water permitting thats done with no real focus on the consequences except the continued patronage of Big Ag, Florida Associated Industries and the Florida Chamber of Commerce. Setting MFLs at HISTORICAL protective levels draws a line that should have been drawn decades ago. Had we resolved to treat our precious springs, rivers and aquifer as a finite resource and focused on good water policy, the dire situation were facing now might not be happening and we wouldnt need to turn to the courts for relief. The time for a comprehensive, longterm water restoration policy is now. Thanks to David Guest and Earth Justice for moving the ball down the road.
