Ebola, the latest media creation of mass hysteria. Dont overact in fear! I read an interesting article about the Ebola scare in todays USA TODAY newspaper. The article took a more sober and civil approach to the issue, one less hyped by fear than the normal media-based hysteria that masses of people seem to find intriguing. In order to keep viewership high for Network television and newspapers sales, both of whom make their biggest money from commercial sales during the broadcasts, etc, they must keep bad or threatening news out and up front. For them, it is less about protecting or informing people than about making money in a highly competitive media market, especially with literally hundreds of television channels and the Internet to compete with, all attracting their own audiences and interests. According to the World Health Organization, the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, reportedly the largest in the 40 year history of the virus, has so far infected 7,178 people and killed nearly 3500. What we think about we bring about and what we fight we tend to ignite, incite and even invite into our reality. The medias constant coverage of this subject triggers the deadly negative emotions and energy of fear and paranoia, entrapping an entire culture into its grip and pre-occupation. Media is very powerful and creates the atmosphere it chooses to for its own purpose and agenda. Lisa Maragakis, Associate Hospital Epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore said: Its important to keep things in perspective. She compared Ebola intimidation to Americans fear of flying. Though millions are afraid to fly, far more people are killed in cars. The Ebola hysteria has put people in a greater panic than more common germs and viruses like influenza (the flu) which poses a far greater threat to Americans and kills as many as 49,000 people in this country every year, far less than other places, because of the common access to shots, remedies and treatment than more under-developed countries. According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention, some 200,000 Americans are hospitalized a year for the flu who may have otherwise died. Flu is the greater threat and a common one, but it doesnt sell newspapers or increase TV audiences. Julia Shaklee Sammons, medical director of infection prevention and control at the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia says, “Ebola is not easy to get and that Measles, one of the most infectious diseases in the world, is far easier to catch than Ebola.” Sammons also says “Ebola, like AIDS, cant spread through the air. It can spread only through direct contact with bodily fluids, primarily blood. So far, Ebola could be far less lethal in a developed country that has access to modern intensive care.” The hyped fear is really a farce, but works for media and distracts from other more practical and important social issues. As Theodore Roosevelt said during the Depression Era here in America: The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself!” If you’re going to have faith, have faith in God and yourself, but not in what you fear, because as Neale Donald Walsh says in his book Conversations With God, ” what you fear most, you ultimately experience.” I add to that, likewise, what you faith (believe) most, you ultimately experience. Listen to you heart and gain counsel and coaching from you own spirit, your divine self and soul. Peace is possible!
