Editor In-chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper Kweku Baako has described as false, comments by Dr. Richard Anane that Nana Addo’s men schemed to get candidate John Kufour replaced after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Delegates Conference in Speaking Wednesday, on Peace FM’s morning show Mr Baako said Dr. Anane has “Dr. Anane made this allegation over the weekend when he was speaking at the campaign launch of flagbearer hopeful, Alan Kyerematen. He alleged, after the delegates elected John Agyekum Kufour as their presidential candidate in 1998, Stanley Adjiri Blankson who was a leading member of Nana Akufo-Addo’s campaign team at the time, and some others he did not mention, schemed to have John Kufour dropped and replaced by their candidate. He said recent calls on other candidates to step down for Nana Akufo-Addo was a reminiscent of what happened in 1998, describing the calls as disrespect for delegates. However, Kweku Baako said he can say on authority that the comments “are not true but even if they were, how were they going to execute the move when most of the stewards in the party are lawyers. They couldn’t have done that without stepping on toes, the party would have never recovered from it”. He also said it will be unfortunate for anyone to say that because, Nana Akufo-Addo was embittered by the defeat, left for the UK and did not take part in the campaign leading to the 2000 elections. “All votes were in favour of Kuffour and Nana conceded defeat and even declared that in the year 2000 Kufour will emerge president. But even then there was no embargo placed on traveling and Nana had the right to travel anywhere he wanted”. He said there was no doubt that Nana Akufo-Addo campaigned for the then candidate Kufour adding “there are media reports in their hundreds which indicate that Nana campaigned for Kufour over a period of eight months before the elections”. Mr Baako said the comments are absurd and are geared towards tarnishing Nana Akufo-Addo’s reputation and that “Nana is a solid political figure and no one must disgrace him”.
