Editorial du journal montréalais en langue anglaise, Montreal Gazette In France and elsewhere, it’s important for people to resist the influence of reactionary forces that may seek to capitalize on terrorist attacks. Europe is already roiled by polarizing and sometimes xenophobic politics, making unity and inclusion key challenges in the wake of this massacre. In Canada, as well, we must avoid the temptation to turn inward out of fear. Events in France tend to be felt most strongly in Quebec; however it is reassuring that Quebecers have already rebuffed fear-mongering divisiveness by voting out a government that attempted to legislate values. There is no good reason to reopen that debate. The antidote to spasms of violence, whether in France or in Canada, is understanding and respect. It is in showing solidarity and humanity to those who are different from oneself. It is by finding common ground while standing up for our most cherished values. Extremism of one sort cannot be conquered by extremism of another. Otherwise, the extremists win.
