Education as a positive enabler Rio advocates use of education as a means to bring positive impact in society Nagaland Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio on Thursday advocated the use of education to bring about positive impact in society. He said this while addressing the 16th biennial General Conference of the All Nagaland College Students’ Union at Phek Town Hall. Stating that education is the most important element in human society, he urged both young and old to continue with a zeal for learning. Rio asserted that education is a priority for the government and informed that the government has taken up colleges in all districts and sub divisions in the state, as per demand and requirement of the people. Rio lamented that technical and quality education is still lacking in Nagaland. He regretted that the state is yet to have medical, engineering and technical institutions worth the name till now. He further stated that a civilized society needs security, justice and harmony. Referring to Nagaland state government’s move to brand Phek district as ‘The land of tradition,’ Rio said that people in Phek district possess traditional facets of hard work, sincerity, integrity and focus. He expressed hope for these ideals to exist in all Naga inhabited areas. He further urged the youth to display sincerity and integrity while working for the future. Referring to the conference theme; ‘Synthesizing education and culture,’ Rio called for modern education and Naga culture to be synchronized, “so as to preserve our culture and tradition.” He also expounded on the importance of developing a work culture and an industrial culture. Referring to the service sector, Rio said that job avenues in the government sector have reached saturation point. He added that there are excess government employees. Informing that there are around 60,000 educated unemployed youth in the live register of employment exchange in Nagaland, Rio called for the youth to focus beyond white collar jobs. He emphasized on the need to adopt modern agriculture systems and enhance manufacturing activities. Rio said there is no dearth of job if one is willing to work. Rio affirmed that the government would do its best to give opportunities and assured to attend to the grievances of the students and teachers. “We want to bring change to our state,” he stated. Minister for Roads & Bridges and Parliamentary Affairs Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu in his speech called upon the student community to be an agent of change in society. He asserted that the government and students need to work together. Also speaking on the occasion, Naga Students’ Federation President, Tongpang Ozukum said the Federation had shared the problem of illegal immigration in the entire north east at the recent NESO meeting held at Guwahati. He said the NSF was proposing the initiation of appropriate measures to check the influx of illegal immigrants. “We cannot afford to sacrifice our future for any cost,” he added.
