Elfsborg caught up in Champions League betting scandal Celtic’s Champions League opponents Elfsborg are at the centre of match fixing allegations following their 11-1 victory over Latvian champions Daugava Daugapils. The scoreline certainly raised eyebrows across the continent with the Swedish side shrugging aside their disappointing league form to comfortably book a place in the third qualifying draw with Celtic. UEFA have become increasingly suspicious of matchfixing with a multitude of betting opportunities in every match putting temptation in the way of the unscrupulous. The most alarming feature of the Elfsborg- Daugava match, apart from Mo Bangura scoring, was that five of the Elfsborg goals came in the last 30 minutes turning the tie around from a 2-0 advantage to a resounding 7-1 victory. Concerns about the match were first raised in Latvia with leading Swedish newspaper Aftonbladset questioning some Elfsborg players about the match. Two goal Andreas Klarstrom said: “I have trouble believing this claim, they stood still with nine players around their own penalty area, they were simply not a good team. Team-mate Johan Larsson added: “It’s scary if true, football should be decided on the field.” Responding to the allegations about his club Daugava director Romance Lajuks said: “I do not know how to respond to these allegations, they are preposterous.” Betting scandals and match fixing has become an increasing problem in football particularly in poorer countries although as ever Scottish football is way to honest to be involved in anything so underhand. A number of enquiries are ongoing into match fixing in football but with so much betting opportunities available football like cricket, snooker and tennis is wide open to manipulation. Jaybhoy
