Elmer has bad headaches. The truth is, I was new to writing and I didn’t know how to look up information on the internet and research things about the medicine available at the time his surgery took place. I just couldn’t let Elmer die. Nan had been through too much. When I thought about how to help him get over this terrible condition, I remembered a story I heard on my local radio station years before. This is how the story went: It was an interview with an ‘old timer’ from our area. He said that in the early days of our town there was a rancher who had a top hand with terrible teeth. They were causing him to have horrible headaches, so the boss took the ranch hand to town to see the doctor. Every tooth in his mouth was abscessed. The doctor didn’t have pain killers like we have today, so he gave the ranch hand a bottle of whiskey. The man was used to drinking a lot, so the drink didn’t knock him out. The doctor then put an iron kettle on the ranch hand’s head and hit it with a hammer to knock him out so that he could pull all his teeth. I remember laughing so hard when I heard this on the radio. I told this story to friends and family. Everyone, while horrified, laughed. I just had to use this example in Nan’s Journey.
