Email from our outbound student to Lithuania, Reed Rodgers. Hello everybody Since my last email I’ve been settling in well. School School has started, the first week was strange, there was an assembly, then there was a new timetable day with shortened, modified introductory classes. The timetable changed every day for the first few weeks, but now we’ve got a consistent weekly timetable. I’ve got lots of Lithuanian, English, and math classes, with a few biology and chemistry classes a week. In addition to that, on Monday we have History,Tuesday we have Ethics, Wednesday there’s Theatre, Gym, and Dance, and on Friday there’s IT, History, and Gym. My favourite classes are math, because I understand it, and Gym, Dance, and IT, because I can understand a fair amount, and they’re fun and interesting. I look forward to understanding more of the language so I can understand History, because that will probably be an interesting class. After School After class I’ve been visiting shops and walking around Silute, and spending time with friends. I also got a gym membership recently, so I can start to go to the gym after school as well. Normally I have a few hours after class to eat, explore, and hang out with friends. People here have been very friendly and welcoming, or, more probably, I haven’t met the people who aren’t friendly, but everyone’s been great so far. Around five my host father picks me up at Gilija, and we go home, have supper, watch TV and hang around the house, then play a few rounds of chess around nine. Family My host family has been great, They are very friendly and keep me well fed. My mom and dad speak English a little worse and a little better than my Lithuanian, respectively, and my two sisters speak perfectly. We live in a nice house in the middle of a small mixed tree forest. I also have grandma who lives with us, who speaks Lithuanian and Russian. My family is very good, and I’ve enjoyed my time with them. Non-Routine Events On my second weekend in Silute I went to Palanga for a small concert, because my host sister is going out with a famous Lithuanian singer. The weekend after that I went to Kaunas for the Rotary games. I arrived on Friday, and had to sit through a few hours of speeches before introducing myself briefly, and then having lunch. After that I got a tour of the old town before reception at Town Hall. The next day I marched in the opening parade for the Rotary games, and carried a large flag with the other exchange students. After that we went bowling, but I had to leave early. On Sunday I went out picking mushrooms with my host father, which a popular tradition in Lithuania. On my fourth weekend I went to Klaipeda with a friend to see the “Maze Runner” in a theatre in the mall. I got back to Silute around eight, and was picked up an hour later by my host sister, who invited me to Klaipeda again, to see her boyfriend in concert at bigger nightclub. I learned that day that I have no idea how to behave in a club setting. The speakers were loud enough to make my pants vibrate visibly, which was impressive. I thought that only happened in cartoons. Nothing happened on Saturday, but on Sunday I went to Klaipeda again to buy more clothes. On the next Friday my school had an assembly to celebrate Shakespeares 450th birthday. I read a biography on Shakespeare in English, and sonnet 116 in French. That weekend I got sick, and was in bed with a headache for a long time. This Friday I taught English to ninth graders in another school because it was teachers day. It was an underachieving class, so they didn’t speak English well, but my friend spoke with them in Lithuanian for a bit, and I told them the pope story in English. They could understand most of it, and my friend translated when necessary. The classes were thirty minutes instead of forty five, so school ended early, and I met some friends who showed me around Silute some more. When my host father picked me up he told me I would be changing houses on Sunday, which was sooner than I had thought, so today I packed and wrote emails. Reed
