#EnglishPunctuationSeries COLON ( : ) The use of a colon - TopicsExpress

#EnglishPunctuationSeries COLON ( : ) The use of a colon indicates that what follows is going to explain, illustrate or provide examples etc. of the first clause. Ex: POTAG declared a strike action: the government refused to pay their Book and Research Allowance. The second clause gives us the reason for the strike. SEMI- COLON ( ; ) unlike the Colon, semi- colon indicates that the subsequent independent clause is going to give you a different side of the first clause. Both clauses must be closely related. Ex: POTAG declared a strike action; its members were on their various campuses. The second clause does not explain or tell us the reason for the strike. It only tells us there was a strike action but the members were still on campus. We can simply replace the semi- colon with the conjunction but.
