Eric Mills has been playing 11 years and finally realized that a car as a bass drum suits his drumming best. The video came about because Eric arrived early to a band rehearsal and didnt want to take his whole kit out of the car to warm up. THAT was his flux-capacitor moment! Here are some questions I had for him- and there is a question for all of you at the end: Q: How many cars did you have to go through before you found just the right tone? A: I started with an SUV, which had a think tone, but no resonance. The Sedan had the perfect resonance and attack. Q: Does the color matter? A: Color does not make a huge difference, but the texture of the paint does, i.e. glossy vs. matte. Q: Which do you prefer” A: I prefer glossy, maybe even a bit of sparkle, which the car in the video has. Q: Might you be compelled to use a fancier car for more upscale gigs? A: Yeah, the thought appeals to me, but I don’t have fancy car money … yet. Q: Does this get cumbersome in the studio and do engineers freak out? A: The engineers, usually question me at first and suggest a traditional bass drum, but I get them to understand, and yes, it can be cumbersome, but worth it. Q: Is there going to be a tour and if so, will you take your own car or hook up with local dealerships for back-line? A: A little sweepstakes in each town of the tour would hook me up a local fan’s car. I like to people involved. B: Besides you, what drummer do you think has done more with less? A: Without a doubt, Jojo Mayer. He can take a snare and pair of brushes and do more than most can with an entire kit. There ya have it! And what drummer do YOU think does more with less??? (Besides Eric Mills)
