Etymological Fact of the Day Why do the romance languages say "Russian Mountain" for roller coaster? The oldest roller coasters descended from the so-called "Russian Mountains," which were specially constructed hills of ice around Saint Petersburg in the 17th century. The slides were 21-24m high and had 50 degree drops. Ironically, the Russian term for roller coaster, американские горки (amerikanskie gorki), translates literally as "American mountains."
