Every few months theres a new special supplement being promoted by people on TV (like Doctor Oz) as the missing link to our fat loss problems. And, everyone is quick to notice this pattern (i.e., the new missing link is better than the last missing link), recognize the lack of good scientific evidence to support the claims made about these products, and sees it as a POSITIVE thing to criticize those who promote products based on bad or nonexistent evidence in the name of consumer protection. And, I agree! However, every few years theres a new special (corrective) exercise method being promoted by people in the professional fitness training and rehabilitation field as the missing link to our training problems, and no one seems to notice this pattern (i.e., the new missing link is better than the last missing link), dont seem to care about the lack of good scientific evidence to support the claims made about these methods, and sees it as a NEGATIVE thing to criticize those who promote methods based on bad or nonexistent evidence in the name of being ahead of research. In short, criticize Dr. Oz for making big claims based on little to no science and youre someone whos cares about evidence and people knowing the truth. But criticize someone in the fitness of rehab field for making big claims based on little to no science and youre someone whos narrow minded and only cares about hating on others. ^This^ kind of blatant logical Inconsistency is pathetic! Its unprofessional, its beneath us, and it belongs at the kids table. Unfortunately, this type of (sloppy) thinking is not only common among the fitness and rehabilitation fields, its something practitioners are often patting one another on the back for putting on display. Im dedicated to developing a culture in the the fitness field that respects logical consistency, evidence and argument; a culture where professionals are mature enough to understand the difference between challenging ideas and attacking people. And, a culture that recognizes those who continually refuse to use the rules of logic, only use evidence when it suites them, and tells these individuals, this is unacceptable, its back to the kids table you go.
