Exclusive: When Might We See Wanted 2 and the Wicked Movie? Marc Platt and John DeLuca, producers of the upcoming Disney musical Into the Woods, directed by Rob Marshall and adapted with James Lapine from the original 1987 Stephen Sondheim musical with a cast that includes Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Chris Pine and Johnny Depp. During our conversation, we had a chance to ask Platt about some of the other projects he’s been developing, and being that he produced the 2008 action hit Wanted, based on the comic book by Marc Millar and J.G. Jones, we decided to ask him if there’s any progress on the sequel which seems to be getting further away from happening. Various people involved with the first movie have been asked about a sequel over the years (you can read much of what they said here), but this seemed like a good time to go to the one person who would know exactly what’s going on. “We have a script that’s getting pretty good,” Platt explained. “To do a sequel when it wasn’t really set up for a sequel–one of our main characters dies in it. You don’t want to just retread a similar story, but when we get the script to a certain bar, there will be a sequel. It’s taken a while because it’s challenging, as I said, because we lost a main, main character, so where that James McAvoy character goes now… we have good ideas though. It’s coming along.” Since the original graphic novel (which was released as a mini-series) was an all-in-one story, we were curious about how involved Marc Millar would be the story for the sequel or if he even might do a second series. “He’s always going to be involved but he’s not going to write the screenplay which is far along, as I said, but he’s always going to be involved because the tone he puts forth is so much his tone and I think the film captured that dark humor of his really well.” wickedmovienewsThe other project that Platt has had in development for a number of years is a movie based on the hit Broadway musical Wicked, which one would think would be lying in wait if Into the Woods is a big hit this holiday season, but the producer is in no hurry for that one. “The movie of Wicked is still a number of years down the line,” he told us. “We’ve just started its development, because the show’s still so strong with eight or nine companies around the world. That’s coming in the future. That’s why I haven’t been in a hurry, because it works so well on stage and audiences are enjoying it. It’s not a timely story, it’s a timeless sorry, so I’ve been very sanguine to let folks explore it theatrically and when we’re ready we’ll make a movie.” We’ll have more with both producers sometime before the release of Into the Woods on Christmas Day, and you can also read what Platt has to say about working again with Meryl Streep on Ricki and the Flash, in which she sings in a very different style.
