FAMOUS PEOPLE YOUVE FORGOTTEN ABOUT, OR NEVER KNEW: Fame is fickle and quick. I heard Totie Fields name the other day, and said to myself, Oh, I remember her! She was like an early Roseanne Barr. She died when she was only 48 years old, but she seemed much older than that. I remember her mainly from the Merv Giffin and Mike Douglas shows. Those two shows were so similar, it is hard to separate them in my memory. They were both big band singers turned TV talk show hosts. Anyway, Totie was heavy and started losing weight by losing body parts, first she had a leg cut off, then the trend continued. To me, she was likable, but not super funny. She was more like a funny relative than a comedian, but humor is so objective...she WAS a professional and worked the big venues of her day, like the Ed Sullivan Show and Vegas, among others.
