*FANTASY BASEBALL NEWS* Jay Bruce (knee) took batting practice and did some jogging Tuesday. Bruce is just eight days removed from surgery to repair a partially torn meniscus in his left knee, but hes making rapid progress. I’m feeling good, feeling great, completely pain free, he said Tuesday. There is still some general swelling from the surgery. I hit off the tee and threw Sunday, then jogged and took BP today. Bruce is expected back around the beginning of next month. Jason Kipnis (oblique) has begun hitting off a tee. Kipnis was placed on the disabled list at the beginning of May with a right oblique strain and is not expected to return to the Indians active roster for at least another two weeks. Mike Aviles has been getting the majority of playing time at second base. Josh Hamilton (thumb) is expected to begin taking batting practice this weekend. Hamilton said last week that hes aiming to return to the Angels active roster around May 23-25. That may be slightly optimistic, but only slightly. He has been on the shelf since April 9 with a left thumb injury. Chris Tillman has some minor groin discomfort. The Orioles arent sure whether hes going to be able to take his next turn in the starting rotation. Tillman allowed three runs over five innings in a loss to the Astros on Sunday. Carlos Beltran has been diagnosed with a bone spur in his right elbow. Beltran hyperextended the elbow while taking swings in the batting cage between at bats during Mondays game. He received a cortisone shot to deal with the pain and hopes to avoid a stint on the disabled list, but in season surgery is possible if it doesnt work. Mets manager Terry Collins said Tuesday that his closer will be a game by game decision. Jeurys Familia, Kyle Farnsworth, Daisuke Matsuzaka, and Jose Valverde are all expected to get chances until one emerges as a reliable go to option. Familia has a 3.12 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 17 1/3 innings this year and seems like the most optimal fantasy pickup. Padres activated OF Carlos Quentin from the 15 day disabled list. Quentin missed the first six weeks of the 2014 regular season with a knee injury. He didnt hit very well on his minor league rehab assignment but has excellent career numbers away from Petco Park and is worth rostering in most standard mixed fantasy leagues. The Orioles will call up Kevin Gausman from Triple A Norfolk to start Wednesday against the Tigers. Its a surprising choice, especially considering that Gausman just made his return from pneumonia on Saturday, striking out six batters over 4 2/3 scoreless innings. Its unclear whether this will just be a spot start, but its obviously a situation worth monitoring in fantasy leagues. Gausman could make a big impact if the Os let him stick around in the rotation. Yankees placed RHP Shawn Kelley on the 15 day disabled list, retroactive to May 7, with a back injury. Kelley was expected to be available Monday night, but Yankees manager Joe Girardi said after the game that he wasnt ready yet. He has already been sidelined for a week, so hell be eligible to return late next week if he can get back on track physically. Brewers placed 3B Aramis Ramirez on the 15 day disabled list, retroactive to May 11, with a strained left hamstring. The Brewers are getting Ryan Braun back Tuesday, but their lineup takes another hit with the loss of Ramirez. Mark Reynolds and Jeff Bianchi figure to split playing time at third base during his absence while Lyle Overbay should see most of the at bats at first base. Royals placed 2B Omar Infante on the 15 day disabled list, retroactive to May 7, with back stiffness. Infante has already been sidelined for a week and will now get some extra rest. The good news is that hes eligible to return in just over one week from now. The Royals have called up Pedro Ciriaco in a corresponding roster move.
