FATHER KNOWS BEST By Phyllis Traughber Hebrews 12:5-11 .....My son, do not make light of the Lords discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, (6) because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son. (7) Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? (8) If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline),then you are illegimate children and not true sons. (9) Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! (10) Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplined us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. (11) No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Chasten - to punish in order to make better; subdue; refine. Chastening is not God getting even with us, but He is preparing us for something better, more valuable and worthwhile. The chastisement of our earthly father lasted only a short while, the chastisement of our heavenly father will only last a short while if we submit and will cease when the purpose for which it was sent is accomplised. God chastens us for our own profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. Often God chastens the very ones who, as far as we can tell didnt need it or deserve it. Job was perfect and upright, yet God put him through an extreme trial. Chastening is proof of a fathers love. Love that is not joined with reproof is not genuine. It is by Gods discipline that we are made. Satan showed up when the sons of God came to present themselves to the Lord and God said to him, have you considered my servant Job? God knows what we are made of and always remember Father knows best. D.L. Moody was seated on a platform when he heard the preacher say, The world has yet to see what God can do with one man who is utterly committed to him. Mr. Moody said in his heart, I propose to be that man. Within days his church and home burned. Sometimes God sees how deep that commitment goes. Will I stay true to God through the testing or will I decide I didnt deserve so severe a punishment and turn my back on God? I Peter 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit. When God chastens you when you have done right, and you take it well, then you can be trusted. This shows the marks of maturity. Sometimes we may lose a battle, but still win the war. Im sure Job couldnt understand why God would allow Satan to attack his life so severely, actually Satan had played right into Gods hands. God used Satan to help Job see that he really could be trusted. You may not understand what you are going through, you may even ask the question, what did I do to deserve this? I can promise you one thing....God has a plan for your life. Remember Hebrews 12:11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. Remember Father knows best and His grace reaches where you are at.
