[FG, STATES AGREE ON ONE PERCENT DEDUCTION TO FUND POLICE] ---------------------------- The Federal Government has agreed to a one percent first line charge deduction during the revenue allocation to fund police with immediate effect. Addressing State House correspondents at the end of the National Economic Council (NEC), the Governors of Niger, Babangida Aliyu, Adamawa, Murtala Nyako, Anambra State, Peter Obi, said over 90 percent of those present endorsed the recommendation. The governors were joined by the Ministers of National Planning, Shamsuden Usman, Police Affairs, Caleb Olubolade, Minister of State for Finance, Yerima Ngama and the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar. Obi said the council was presented with a memorandum on the funding of the Police Reform Programme by him as chairman of the Nigeria Police Reform Interim Implementation Committee. He said the committee recommended the pruning down of the initial overall cost estimate of the reform from N2.8 trillion to N1.5 trillion, as well as the extension of the reform period from five to six years, to ensure the government’s commitment to the transformation of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for effective security service delivery. “The memo also recommended a joint funding of the revised cost of N1.5 trillion with 60 percent coming from the three tiers of government while the Organised Private Sector (OPS) and international development partners would contribute 40 percent. Aliyu said the council, while commending the state governors for agreeing to accelerate the drive to address the challenge of out-of-school children, agreed to put in place at state levels efficient implementation machinery to take advantage of aid from the Nigerian business community, UN Education First initiative and the Global Business Coalition on Education.
