FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Jay Van Deusen Rainbow International of Northeastern Maryland 410.808.3266 jay@remodelmaryland RAINBOW INTERNATIONAL OF NORTHEASTERN MARYLAND SPONSORS FIRST ANNUAL RIB-OFF BEL AIR, MD (August 3, 2013) Revving it up prior to the Maryland State BBQ championships to be held this week end in Bel Air, The first annual Rainbow International ‘Rib-off’ was hosted this past week end at the popular Two Black Dogs Patio and Grill in Bel Air. Rainbow International of Northeastern Maryland was the event sponsor. Winners of the contest competed for a spot at the amateur Tailgate Challenge, to be held at the Aegis parking lot this Friday afternoon. Spots at the Tailgate challenge have been difficult to come by, according to Jay Van Deusen, the Rib-off coordinator for Rainbow International of Northeastern Maryland. ‘We had been trying for several weeks to get in there, and finally we did. One of my technicians found out about it. See, barbeque is a passion here at Rainbow International. The technicians at Rainbow bragged that their barbeque ability was equal to or better than their ability to do structural drying, or even ridding a house impacted by a stubborn smokey fire. All of the techs at Rainbow wanted to partake in the event. Rather than to share, I thought, let’s give it to the best! We could have an informal rib judging, under the suggested guidelines of a KCBS event, much like what the big boys do. The winner of the Rib-off will get the spot at the Tailgate Challenge. The winning smoker will compete as the coveted Rainbow Rib Master of Northeastern Maryland’. The first annual rib-off was conceived. Four Teams Participated in the event. Two Black Dogs BBQ fielded a team (Jay Van Deusen), followed by ‘Little Pea Barbeque’ (David Limbach), Wheeler Smokehouse BBQ (Matt Wheeler) and Rocking Pig BBQ (Kevin McShane). Rainbow International of Northeastern Maryland provided each contestant with two racks of ribs. A pre-event meeting was held at Two Black Dogs Patio and Grill at 11 am Saturday, then contestants hurried back to their own grilling sites and worked their magic on their meat by massaging and rubbing it gently with their own spice mix prior to a low and slow heat mixed with warm hardwood smoke. Cooks returned their racks of perfected smoked meat back to the Two Black Dogs Patio site by 4 pm the same day for judging. ‘I’ve never competed in an event like this before’, participant Mat Wheeler noted. Four hours to get your rack in the smoker and work you magic with it? Didn’t think it could be done.’ Wheeler commented while nervously waiting for the results of the judging to come back in. ‘You don’t have anything to worry about’, barked Kevin McShane who bragged on his Horizon 800# behemoth off-set smoker to take on Wheelers first time ribs, ‘Cause I am going to win!” Dave Limbach of Little Pea BBQ chided the contestants while sipping something cold in a red Solo cup: ‘I’ve been smoking pork longer than you children have been tying your shoes. Your going down, kiddies.’ McShane reminded Limback of Little Pea BBQ not to get too fired up after recovering from a recent bout of kidney stones. Wheeler spent most of last week cleaning and getting his ‘rig’ ready for the Rainbow Rib-off. ‘I bought this Char-griller from an old man on Craigs List for $60 dollars last spring. The old codger said it was time to move on, and he was looking for an up grade. Wheeler made the purchase and loaded the unit in the back of his Chevy pick-up by himself. Wheeler smirked about the other contestants big smokers. ‘They paid more in freight than I did buying my smoker. Lets see who wins today.’ Judging for the event was held in one very similar to KCBS (Kansas City Barbeque Society) Standards. Four Judges were nominated for the event based on a short questionnaire and their carnivorous love of barbeque. Judges had to answer questions such as: ‘Would you accept money for a winning vote? Do you only vote republican? Do you believe that PETA members have never had good bbq?’ Judges making the cut for the event were Chris Bruneau of Paul Davis Restoration, Nathan Prouse of Bel Air, Stephen Prouse of Upper Chesapeake Health System and Fabian Mantilla of Rainbow International of Northeastern Maryland. Stephen Prouse was on hand to remind everyone about the differences between good cholesterol and bad cholesterol. ‘I am here to tell all of you this is all bad, artery clogging cholesterol. Give me all your samples so I can eat them.’ Judging took place in the Two Black Dogs Pavilion away from the contestant area. Judging was based upon three critical areas: Appearance, Taste and Tenderness. Table Judge Linda Van Deusen completed serving the judges and tallying scores to determine the winner. ‘I just want everyone to win! I am well, you know, like Switzerland. It’s so sad to see anyone lose. We are all winners, right? If it were up to me, everyone would win, and the pigs would come back to life!’ Judging now completed, the contestants and invited guests gathered in the Two Black Dogs Labrador Hall area to hear the winners. Event organizer Jay Van Deusen praised the contestants for their hard work and adherence to the high standards of barbeque. Third Place was announced: Kevin McShane of Rocking Pig BBQ. Kevin picked up a beautiful custom trophy emblazed with a chicken on it remarked with the Rib-off year and date, along with a small note indicating that he should consider cooking chicken next time. Second place was awarded to Dave Limbach of Little Pea BBQ who limped up to the podium in Labrador Hall to accept his second place rib award, while holding a small screen in one hand and a fine trophy with a golden duroc hog attached to it. Then, Labrador Hall went silent. You could only hear the panting of the crowd. Van Deusen Boomed: ‘the winner of the first annual Rainbow Rib-off and the opportunity to represent the Famous Rainbow International of Northeastern Maryland BBQ Team in the Tailgate challenge goes to …. Matt Wheeler of Wheeler Smoke House BBQ!’ Wheeler was giddy in his excitement while holding a 24 carrot golden plastic pig mounted on a beautiful Italian marble base donated by Rainbow International. ‘I’d like to thank my co workers who coached me, but most of all to Mr. Van Deusen who bought me the book by Myron Mixon for my birthday that I got the winning rub and recipe from! Mr. Van Deusen looked away, now realizing that he had bought the bullets for the gun that killed Two Black Dogs rib entry, and didn’t even qualify for the top three spots in the contest. Van Deusen Snickered: ‘Next year I’ll get him a book on tofu and bbq and see how he does’.
