FORMER PRESIDENT ABDUSSALAM ABUBAKAR HAS COMMISSIONED SOKOTO. STATE UNIVERSITY 29/10/2013 Former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar( rtd),has called on the management of the newly- inaugurated Sokoto state university, to blend local contents with global orientation in its teachings and research, so as to attain global best practices. Abubakar who was speaking at the inauguration of the university, said this was one of the uniqueness that it must attain, if it is to be relevant and have the ability to integrate its products in the society. He said that, the university must set high standard of academic excellence, by devising programs in partnership with foreign educational institutions, as well as recruiting personnel from all parts of the world. He urged, the students should get the best education, while the teachers and other staff of the university, must do the best in their duties. The former Head of state added that, While the society to whom the University belongs, must perform their own duties, in order to make it succeed. He pointed out that, the Sokoto governments commitment to the establishment of the university is a commendable gesture. Abdussalam also rejoicing with the people of sokoto state who had shown that they are in search of development. In his remarks the speaker house of Representatives Aminu Waziri Tambuwal lauded Wamakko for his giant strides in the state and urged the management of the university to manage the facilities efficiently for the benefit of Nigerians. Commenting on the milestone, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Saad Abubakar III, said the caliphate was founded on knowledge and commended Wamakko for his foresight and vision. Also speaking The former Head of state, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari( rtd), described education as the most important determinant for any people to enhance their participation in public affairs. He said that, the federal government has not being able to adequately cater for its universities. Buhari also lamented that a huge number of qualified applicants were not able to gain admission into the universities. Also speaking Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar says no country or society can fully develop without education. According to him, the importance of education cannot therefore be over emphasized in any society or country. He added that,The efforts of the sokoto state government for establishing the institution is highly commendable. Also speaking, Rivers state governor, Rotimi Amaechi, appealed to his colleagues to place top priority to the sector. This, Amaechi stated, was to enable the county catch up with the members of the commity of nations. The Special Adviser, higher education, Prof. Gajam Ardo, promised, the University shall endure, blossom and grow into a citadel of learning. This is because, it is created on the model of the sokoto legacy, premised on the culture and tradtions of the defunct sokoto caliphate. Also speaking, the former governor of Lagos state, Mr Bola Tinubu, congratulated the people of sokoto state, especially Gov Aliyu Wamakko, for the university.. He described education as the greatest weapon against poverty and ignorance, saying, it is the only chemical that can break down differences. I salute the courage, commitment and understanding, and we will continue to calloborate with you in your endeavors he said. While acknowledging that there are complexities in the country, Tinubu appealed to Nigerians to use their differences for advancement. In his remarks, the Sokoto State governor said the establishment of the state university would go a long way in meeting the long- term needs of the state and lay a solid foundation for generations yet unborn. The governor pointed out that it was in view of the quest for excellence, that staff members were recruited from India, Egypt and Pakistan, among other countries. He maintained that the university would operate devoid of any strike, as modalities had been put in place to prevent such occurrence. Gov.Aliyu Wamakko thanked God for making the university a realty,for the overall development of the educational sector in the state. The ceremony was also witnessed by second republic President, Shehu shagari, the former Head of state, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari ( rtd) and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Waziri. Others were former vice president Atiku Abubakar the governors of Kano, Jigawa and Adamawa states, Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso, Alhaji Sule Lamido and Admiral Murtala Nyako( rtd), respectively. Other diginitaries who graced the event include the former governors of Lagos, Kebbi and Borno states, Mr Bola Tinubu, sen. Adamu Aleiro and Alhaji Ali Modu-sheriff, respectively, among others.
