FRAN -------------McDowall Explains Resignation Kenny McDowall has said that the last 18 years in the Old Firm goldfish bowl have taken their toll on him, and whilst he fully expects to see out his 12 month notice period, he explained that for him the time was right to part company especially after the last four years at Ibrox. Having tendered his resignation last week after only three games in charge following the resignation of former manager Ally McCoist, our current gaffer explained that he needed a break from the current chaos at the club. To be quite frank, the last four years have been tough. That aside, I have been nearly 18 years at the Old Firm and it takes its toll. I just told the club Im happy to honour my contract for the next 12 months and then step aside. Im not complaining because you cant be involved in clubs like these and not have stress - its all part and parcel of the job. It was a really tough decision. I made it last Wednesday and the club received a letter on the Thursday. McDowall says that having talked with his family, it really was the right thing to do at this stage of his career and he will ultimately leave with a lot of happy memories, but also many unhappy ones given the journey of the club in recent years. Coming so soon after the resignation of McCoist, McDowall says he had asked for the news to kept in house, so he could speak to the players and have everything out on the table, but as soon as it leaked the players heard about the news before he could speak to them, and that disappointed him. Having been part of the club for so long, most can forgive McDowall for the comments that make it sound like this isnt the Rangers he signed on to - and there is a parallel with McCoist who talked about being paying for the mistakes of others with their jobs. Walter Smith brought me here eight years ago as first team coach. Now Im sitting here as caretaker manager wondering where everybody has went. Its just a bit strange. Ive tried to handle it as best I can. Nevertheless its been a fantastic experience. This is a massive job and its an absolute honour to be sitting here as caretaker. Thats what made it such a difficult decision.
