FROM THE NEWSROOM: Passing the torch from one farming generation - TopicsExpress

FROM THE NEWSROOM: Passing the torch from one farming generation to another is rarely an easy task, which is why the Brooklyn Agricultural Commission is brainstorming possible ideas for a regional meeting to educate the farming community on closing the generation gap. Commission member Joyce Meader says transferring farms from an older generation to a younger generation is a challenge that many farming families may face, but with all the responsibility that comes along with running a farm, many older farmers are hesitant to hand over the reins. Meader hopes that at a communication workshop, the Commission can hand out worksheets for farm-owners and their successors to fill out, sharing their goals with one another in an effort to meet the ultimate goal: keeping the local farming community healthy and viable. Meader says that although many years ago there was little interest in farming coming from the younger generation around Windham County, in recent years the situation has changes, and shes excited to see the youth becoming more interested in agriculture again. Tune in for the full report.
