FYI regarding horse slaughter in America. Received the following e-mail: Letterhead November 18, 2013 Dear Ms. Coffelt: Thank you for contacting me about the topic of horse slaughter. I appreciate hearing your views on this issue. Senator Mary Landrieu has introduced S. 541, the Safeguard American Food Exports Act. This bill would ban horse slaughter for human consumption in the U.S. and prohibit the export of American horses for the same purpose. It is designed to protect horses from inhumane treatment, and humans from the health threats posed by the consumption of horses. S. 541 has been referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. Additionally, the Senate Appropriations Committee recently included a ban on domestic horse slaughter as part of the FY 2014 Agriculture Appropriations bill. This ban would prohibit the U.S. Department of Agriculture from using federal funds to inspect horsemeat intended for human consumption, effectively banning domestic horse slaughter. The Presidents budget for FY 2014 called for removing funding for horse slaughter plant inspection. I condemn animal cruelty and fully support punishing those who abuse animals. I support the Animal Welfare Act, which is the main federal law that regulates the treatment of animals in the United States. As Governor of Virginia, I signed a law that imposed stricter legal penalties for dogfighting offenses. I will be sure to keep your views in mind should the Senate consider S. 541, and when the Agriculture Appropriations bill is debated. Thank you again for contacting me. Sincerely, Signature Tim Kaine
