Fabulous binge-watch of True Detective. Watched 7 of the 8 eps today. AMAZING TV show. One of the few TV shows I may go back and rewatch just for the performances (I made the early mistake of thinking it was a plot show.) Woody Harrelson was excellent, Matthew Mcconaughey was outstanding, and the Lovecraftian elements were very clever. The whole feel was very Hannibal, with a dollop of Justified to add grit. Without doing any spoilers, I loved the fact you could take it as either a real-world gritty (nasty) cop character drama where the writers added some Lovecraftian elements to simply give it a nihilistic bleak flavour and tone, or a drama where some of the characters may or may not have been cultists but neither lead knew about it, or even a drama where Matthew Mcconaughey et al were living in an actual Cthulhoid world but - as is the case in chthulhu mythos - they didnt know it. The final scene was just amazing. I dearly hope season 2 does an American Horror Story thing and tells a different tale. A first season that spans 17 years is too epic to follow with the same characters. (Edit: Internets say no more Woody and Matthew. Phew.) Now for GoT ep3, which Teh Internets thoroughly assure me will provide zero light relief.
