Facebook Friend Carl Brennan provided an interesting and thought provoking Comment on treaties, but its more significant in that its good insight into the ways of the world and geopolitics. After a few short paragraphs, you might say to yourself, I never thought of it that way.....I sure didnt. FROM:Carl Brannen There are something like 6900 spoken languages on the planet. But 13 of them account for about half the worlds population. It is these languages around which the worlds great powers are organized: Chinese, Spanish, English, Hindu, Arabic, Portugese, Bengali, Russian, Japanese, Punjabi, German, Javanese and Wu. (Uh, some of these languages dont have much great power status at the moment but have in the past, for example, Spanish.) Its a fact of history that people who speak the same languge tend to stick together in great power conflicts. Conflicts between people who speak the same language tend to be civil war kind of things. I believe this is due to the ease of communication, when Great Britain gets involved in a war with Germany, the US naturally comes to the aid of Great Britain. For similar reasons, if your country is based around a very minor language (i.e. Ukrainian, 36M speakers) and you do anything other than treat minority members of a great power language (i.e. Russian 150M speakers)[respectfully], you can fully expect that the great power is going to do something about it, treaty or no treaty. The Ukrainian politicians must be complete idiots.
