“Fanti political philosophy rejects the doctrine of laissez-faire. The purpose of government, for the Fanti, is not only to give legal protection to society but also to ensure, as far as possible, that all have and none is in need. Government is both the legal and economic custodian of society. For unless there is economic justice, legal justice becomes a chronic problem…. (If you do not make it possible for your neighbor to have nine, you will not have ten either). People can have true legal freedom to enjoy their property only if their neighbors are not hungry. At least the basic necessities of life must be provided freely for all in a free society. For the sake of a label we might call this doctrine Libertarian Basicalism. This is the political philosophy of the Fantis, as also of many other African societies.” “The world today is on the brink of self-destruction because of ideological conflicts, because of wrong philosophies, capitalism and socialism. The capitalist cries: A pint of blood for a loaf of bread! The world is asked to choose between the Scylla of capitalism and the Charybdis of socialism. But might their not be a third? The Fanti political philosopher answers: Yes, Libertarian Basicalism.” Article by Benjamin Ewuku Oguah title “African and Western Philosophy: A Comparative Study” Book title “African Philosophy” edited by Richard A.
