Faseun lied about being founder of OPC -Gani Adams Sun Sep 29th, 2013 - Ogun Coordinator of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Chief Gani Adams, has described reference to Dr Fredrick Faseun as founder of the group as a creation of the media, adding that the old man lied about the formation of the group. Adams spoke in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Friday, after the annual Oro Festival in Iseyin, promoted by his Olokun Festival Foundation, came to an end on Thursday. He said the OPC was formed by nine persons in 1994, adding that none of the nine persons agreed that any particular person should be referred to as its founder. He also said he wondered how Dr Faseun would reconcile his leadership of the new Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) with that of OPC, which he said was a totally non-partisan organisation. “Let me correct that impression about somebody being founder. The media can write anything about founder. Nine people founded OPC. So, Dr Fredrick Faseun is not the founder of OPC. To set the record straight, Oodua is a unique organization which nobody can claim to be a founder of, because it is spiritual. The symbol and progenitor of Yoruba race, Oduduwa, is the founder. “We can only ascribe being founder of Oodua to God; and then, Oduduwa. Nobody on earth can claim to be the founder. May be this is one of the reason Dr Faseun is having problem with his integrity. For him to say he is the founder, he has missed the point,” he said. “Besides, if you look at the protocol of a founder, you will realize that for example, if you found a church, it means you are the spiritual leader. And you are the only person that formed the name. You fund it alone; you put the building in place alone. You did almost 80 per cent of the plan to start it, then, you can call yourself a founder of that church. “Look at the Gani Adams Foundation; I found it; it is my name. So, I can call myself its founder. That is different. So, we were nine people that formed OPC. When there was reconciliation through former Governor Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State in 2005, that was one of the issues in contention. “The governor called me and asked what the problem was. And I said look, this old man should not call himself founder. Nine of us sat together in 110, Palm Avenue on 25 August, 1994. We started the meeting at 3.30 pm and ended it 5.30 pm. We suggested two names, Oodua National Congress and Oodua Peoples Congress. Tony Ngrube, an Ijaw man, was even the one that brought the initiative of this organization. It was not Dr Faseun. He was just our leader under NADECO in Mushin area. At the time, we suggested that he should be the convener. “It was when the crisis started and he realized that about 96 per cent of the members nominated me as national president and nobody nominated him that he called on the media to refer to him as founder and that was how it started,” he said
