February 18 2011......a day that I will never forget. My youngest child, Blake, was admitted into St. Louis Childrens Hospital to donate life-giving bone marrow to his sister Brittany who had been diagnosed several months earlier with aplastic anemia. The doctors came to David and I after the collection of bone marrow with three FULL bags of marrow.....a hugely successful operation with millions of cells! The marrow was then delivered to adjoining Siteman Cancer Center where his 22 year old sister was waiting for a new chance at life. The time period following the transplant was very rough for Brittany, but she endured through many continued days of sickness with very little complaining. As we enter this Thanksgiving season, I can also never forget Thanksgiving of 2011. After helping prepare food for the Odin First Baptist Church community Thanksgiving Dinner, we loaded up food to take with us to the hospital where Brittany was still extremely sick and recovering from the transplant. Although she was much too sick to eat much, it was a huge blessing to be able to sit around a table to have Thanksgiving as a family. Paraphrased, one of my favorite scripture verses is Matthew 6: 34. Do not be anxious for tomorrow, because God will take care of your tomorrows, too. Live one day at a time. Two years later, Brittany is the picture of health and is truly considered a success story with her bone marrow transplant. Thank you, Blake, for your selfless act of love. Brittany-thank you for never giving up and fighting for a new chance at life!
