Feeds 100% on the romance of farming. The biggest clue was she has been in it for 2 years. They havent exhausted their funds yet. Farming the way we do is these things - but - it also has to be a business, and fit where people are at. This lacks the sophistication and understanding necessary to move it to the next level. NO you cannot work 365 days a year without break and for no money and do this job for the rest of your life (sustainability). I have for years but it has cost me dearly. NO you cannot be completely out of the mainstream of society and expect more to be attracted to it. We need lots more farms to feed lots more people. YES it has the potential to be a great life, but it wont be like grandma & grandpa did it, and it wont be with draft horses and by hand. You want to do it like that? Its a hobby. Good for you. Its a museum. Good for you. Its entertainment, good for you. But changing how we make food? The future of food? No. The conclusion I have come to is that a modern family scale farm needs smart business people: entrepreneurs on them to innovate. But that the challenges of purchasing farms today needs extra help - and some of that needs come from the hands and hearts of the people that buy the food from that farm. Some good things are in the works, some other things are frustratingly stuck...in...1950...1890...I dont know sometimes. Would you want your kids to be farmers? I mean really. Until that becomes a real and respectable and ---middle class--- job and way of life, were not there. Truly I am trying to work through the issues to make that the case. It will need culture change and that is a tough job.
