Final Fantasy VII: Im not gonna even front. When I heard they were gonna make a Final Fantasy game in 3D back in early 1996, I immediately ran to tell my old man, and he too went batshit insane. To think that such an underrated genre was getting such a big push to the mainstream was quite literally unheard of. Millions of dollars went into the budget for this game... millions. For a game that started production immediately after FFVI in mid 1994, many would believe Hironobu Sakaguchi was out of his dad-gummed mind. But lo and behold, this modern-era Final Fantasy game somehow became a success story for the ages. Taking a step up from the steampunk era of FFVI, the story is basically revolutionaries vs. resource-abusing corporation. Add to it a protagonist with a sword inspired by the infamous Dhylec from he Darkstalkers series, an unexpected plot twist, the most familiar Final Fantasy lore to date, a modern mainstream atmosphere, a token black guy (with broken exploitables in-game, to boot), and a villain for women to gawk at, youve got something thats bound to sell like hotcakes. While it isnt one of my personal favorites in the series as time progressed (still prefer FFVI, FFIV, and FFIX), I at least respect the legacy it left behind: A general acceptance from the mainstream, a bold new standard that virtually every RPG has followed, and trademark high-quality cinematics and visuals that have become a consistent staple for the main series. - with Danny Martinez
