Finally got to watch this last night. Ive been disappointed/bored by the prior episodes but thought this one was pretty terrific. It definitely missed a lot (No Soulhat?!) but covered the right areas. Random things like seeing Clifford Antones face on HBO and hearing Gibby Haynes talk about redneck lesbian neighbors was just cool in a perfectly Austin way. And the parting comments about the citys greatness being at risk was poignant. The big surprise was how heavily focused it was on Austin City Limits (TV), which really doesnt play all that vital a role night-to-night within the music scene -- like SXSW, its more what the tourists know and the locals hope to exploit -- but for me personally that rusty old 6A studio is just huge. The UT journalism school and newspaper office are right next door, so thats four years of my life there (OK, actually five). I saw some of the best performances of my life in that little 300-person room, from the SRV tribute show with Clapton, BB, etc (which I covered for the LA Times) to the second- or third-to-last taping there (also last time I saw Sonic Youth). I love the new studio too, I was just there last year for Dale Watsons first-ever ACL taping (also with Kacey Musgraves). But like so many things in Austin, it used to be better.
