First day of class, the professor of “Introduction to Law” - TopicsExpress

First day of class, the professor of “Introduction to Law” entered the classroom and the first thing he did was to ask a student who was sitting on the first row, what his name was: - What’s your name? - My name is Nelson, sir. - Get out of my classroom and don’t you ever come back again! the upset professor shouted Nelson was bewildered. Then, after a few moments he got up quickly, took his belongings and got out of the classroom. Everyone in the room was afraid and outraged, but no one spoke up. - Very Well! Let’s begin, the professor said. What is the law for? asked the professor. The students were still afraid; but little by little they started answering his question - To have order in our society - No! answered the professor - To comply with them - No! - To use them when people do wrong so that they pay for their actions - No! Does someone know the answer to this question? the professor asked - To make justice - a girl answered very shy - Finally! That’s it, for Justice. Now, What is justice? The students started to get upset due to the professor’s disgusting attitude. However, they continued answering - To safeguard human rights - Good, what else? - To differentiate good from evil, to compensate those who do good. - Ok, not bad, but answer this question: “Was I right in expelling Nelson from the classroom? Everyone remained quiet, nobody answered. - I want a unanimous answer! - No! everyone answered at the same time - Can one say that there has been an injustice here? - Yes! - Then why nobody did anything about it? Why do we have laws and rules if we do not have the necessary will to practice them? Each one of you has the duty to speak up when you witness an injustice. Everyone! Do not remain silent, ever again! Go get Nelson. After all, he is the teacher; I am just the student from the next class period. Learn: when we do not defend our rights, dignity is lost and dignity cannot be negotiated.
