(First pic is before Thamesmead was built) This place was never utopia but it was a place to grow up in and have a great time if you knew how, which is like most of London but Thamesmead was something different and its a shame that all this un-needed change is happening because it will not benefit most residents in the end result.. Thamesmead needed more maintenance and some of the promises of the GLC (Greater London Council) were unfortunately never achieved.. I dont think this town is a failure one bit, every area in the country has had that economical crisis hit and change happens inevitably but i think and i believe the rest of you will agree but if it was properly maintained and more residents stayed (like the ones still at Binsey) there would be alot more original buildings standing such as Tavy Bridge and the famous Pyramid Club. People gave up hope, community spirit was lost and people stopped caring, closed there doors, crime increased and the media used this place like all the other housing estates and helped taint the areas reputation in a negative way. So i think in a way we owe it to ourselves to love or hate this place if you grew up or used to go to school here and play here like i did.. No where is perfect but Thamesmead was different it wasnt just another housing estate, it was an iconic vision of the 1960s and was built to home people but was designed so well that it wouldnt have seemed like it was just for that soul purpose. Its a shame that its now perceived more and more as a dump or a sink esate because there is still Beauty in this place and Ive witnessed first hand the little community spirit that is still there physically and mentally from this facebook page and from places like Birch-mere lake and the Dashwood Club :)
