First review- THEATRE ROYAL BURY ST EDMUNDS Westgate Street, Bury St Edmunds. Suffolk IP33 1QR Reviews by Robert Wright ANYTHING GOES Music and Lyrics by Cole Porter’ Performed by Bury St Edmunds Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds until 18 October 2014 The first thing which will strike you within a few minutes of the start of this show is the sheer enjoyment the cast and orchestra were having in performing this favourite classic musical. It is full of well-known songs which at times you might be tempted to join in and probably spoil things! The awesome Reno is performed by Kate Steggles whose has a grand stage presence and a singing voice to match all her glitzy dresses. Her expressions at times are merely icing on the cake. The mischievous Billy is her friend by not in the way Reno wants, but she accepts in gracious style that his sights are set well above his station at the classy Hope. Liam Corbett plays Billy and has a great chemistry with Reno portraying a good friendship. His desire for Hope has no bounds so being a stowaway in various disguises is all part of an unplanned journey. He meets with gangster Moonface (Bob Moulding) who is far more humorous than deadly. Moonface has a side kick in the form of the blonde bombshell Erma (Laura Barnard) and she portrays this uninhibited girl in cheeky style. Hope was performed on the first night by Jess Elvin and her singing was superb. This role is being shared through the week with Rachelle Curtis. A most amusing character which tended to get under your skin because of his eccentricities was the aristocrat Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. His style and mannerisms were given the full works by Jeremy Warbick who clearly enjoyed this role as much the audience did. The group of ‘Angels’ provided a splendid dancing and singing routine throughout. The choreography was imaginative and successful. The set was most versatile with only minimal changes which did not inhibit this free flowing production. There was a robust performance by the Chorus which also included a role of Boy Sailors. Taking in turns on different nights during the run was Andrew Dougherty and Cameron Parkinson at the start of stage career.
