Follow up to last post about no make up selfies: I do not wear makeup because I am selfish, because I am vain, because I value myself over others, or because I am trying to be someone I am not. I wear makeup because I want to. It takes me about twenty minutes to do it, and as a young mum with a full time job that involves constantly thinking about and designing services for other people, I think twenty minutes to spend on myself each day is a reasonable request. I use my makeup as a form of self expression, turning my face into a reflection of who I truly am inside. In my younger days that involved heavy black eyeliner and a lot of glitter. These days it is more about strong, clear lines. and a bit of glitter. I also paint my nails and like to turn them into mini works of art. Bright colours make me happy, so having them quite literally at my fingertips is an easy way to make me smile. Kudos to you if you dont use makeup to do that, but I do, and i am not in the slightest bit dissatisfied with the no makeup me at all. Wearing makeup uses the same logic that people use behind the clothes they choose to wear, the style they choose for their hair, the car they drive, the place they live, the places they frequent. It is about self expression. At the end of the day, our bodies are living, breathing works of art that we choose to embellish, celebrate and cherish in the way that we personally see fit. We may not understand why people do things to their bodies that are different to our own choices, but that does not make them any less valid that ourselves. So to conclude, a choice not to wear makeup is just as much of a statement as a choice to wear it; I do not spend my time accusing women who do not wear makeup of being lazy because they have a different form of self expression than I do. Please do not accuse me of being selfish, vain or disatisfied with my appearance just because your choices are different than mine.
