Following a challenging night of sleep Deborah had another very good day. Her first nurse today was a CHS graduate from 1988. One of those small worlds things I guess. She has been eating really well. In fact, I had to go to the cafeteria to get her some more breakfast. She has the nurses wrapped around her finger, as they should be. They are following her regiment of a fresh pre-warmed blanket every 2 hours, unless she whats more. She continued to lighten up the room with her incredible smile and laughter. Her motor skills continued to improve throughout the day. In fact, we had a good laugh when she started proving what she could do in PT by staying one test ahead of her therapist. Her speech is just a little delayed but her infectious personality seemed to bring joy out of every visitor and staff member that crossed her path. This afternoon her brother and I broke her out for a short wheelchair escape down the block. It was kind of a déjà vu moment for us. You see, almost 13 years ago exactly, Deborah was recovering from her brain surgery at Sacred Heart and we talked the nurse into letting me take her to the cafeteria for lunch. They conceded and gave us the green light. We rolled down for some food and then made a break for it. We ate our lunch at the down the street in a great flower garden. Like most of my moments with her, I will never forget our fugitive run that day. Deborah had two doctors today that were trying to become triathletes. They both noticed the ironman pics that decorated her small hospital room and were both inspired by her greatness. After all, you may be a former MVP, even a former state champ but when you become an Ironman, you will always be an Ironman. For the past 12 years, cancer has tried everything it could to break Deborahs body but no matter what, she will always be an ironman. Today as I reflected on debs amazing ironman accomplishment, I though it was interesting that so soon after reaching peak physical condition, she was brought to her knees by this cancer. I came to the conclusion that perhaps the reason she was so determined to tackle such an incredible, difficult event was so she was ready to beat this one. Good night. -David Rarrick
