For a belated birthday present, I went to the local cinema and saw the new Godzilla movie. So sue me—I readily admit that Im about as juvenile as it gets when it relates to stuff like this, and the trailers hinted at a well-done version with good actors and high production values. For a good part of the film, they nailed it. Terrific cinematography, coupled with excellent special effects, and a few plot twists added to a practically classic Lovecraftian atmosphere of cosmic horror and doom. Slowly, just a little more than midway through the film, it became a comic-book battle of good versus evil, with every modern Hollywood cliché thrown in—including multiple instances of people barely outrunning explosions and a couple of other cliched near-death escapes youve seen before. It was as if the producers went to a shareholders meeting in the middle of production, and the consensus was that they movie was too dark, so they tacked something else on. Do yourself a favor, and wait until it comes out on cable to watch it, then turn it off when it all goes bad; youll know when.
