For decades, TYP has offered successful applicants a chance to gain entry into the University of Toronto through a full-time access program uniquely geared towards students from at-risk communities. Recently, however, the University administration has been trying to financially starve the program out of existence. Their stated position is that the program fails to turn a profit, and therefore represents a financial burden upon the University. Without immediate financial support, the program will soon be unable to fulfill its sole objective which is to offer potentially life-changing opportunities to those most vulnerable and disenfranchised members of society. Programs like the Transitional Year Programme (TYP) represent an essential component of our shared modern social conscience. They address a social equity need which offsets the small fiscal costs they may incur. Without this particular program, many current UofT students and grads would simply never have been afforded the opportunity to attend this world-renowned institution. It’s important to safeguard and secure this same chance for those students yet to come and to ensure that in the future, they too can be boundless in reaching for their dreams. Moreover, the positive results generated by TYP tend to ripple out through society at large. Its reach truly extends far beyond its grasp and serves to stimulate both hope and change in the many at-risk communities it touches. Losing an enriching program such as this would diminish not only the school, but society as a whole. With your help, together, WE CAN make a difference! We are asking the University to remember its Boundless Campaign and honor all its initiatives of which the Transitional Year Program is one. By supporting TYP many members of our community receive the opportunity to attend a program that has given 43 years of excellence in access to education.
