For many years, the Van Cliburn winners and finalists have indicated that the competition has not usually helped them with their careers. This summer, two of the finalists and the winner, Vadym Khodolenko, will be performing outdoor recitals at a park in my town. Usually about 100 to 150 people attend these concerts on a good night. Tickets are $15.00. Each performer will probably get a couple hundred dollars to give their recital. I will make the same amount of money performing at a pool for a birthday party and I dont have a fraction of their talent. It is unfortunate that such talented people can work their entire lives only to struggle to get adequate compensation.
