For my whole life, Memorial Day has been known and referred to as Decoration Day - it still is. My brother and sisters would ride with my parents and my grandma out into the country to decorate the graves of those who came before us. Not just the fallen soldiers or those who had served, but our civilian kin alongside. War touches everyone, and even though most of us go about our daily lives not immediately marked by the present day wars that cut the earth and kill thousands of innocent people, we will eventually be touched and effected in measures. Its unavoidable with war. No one wins. It is not lost on me that I am the very first in my family to not carry a rifle for the military because of the sacrifices made by those who served before me. On this 70th anniversary of D-Day, I think about my Dad who landed on Omaha beach, my granddad who fought in WWI, my uncle who fought in Korea, my brother, cousins, friends and their children who gifted us everything by their service. The important work of protecting all that they fought for will only prevail by our remembering, celebrating and decorating our heros, with care and humility, without bitterness or regret, but with joy, vigilance of spirit and prayers for peace. https://soundcloud/lotosnilemusic/jeff-black-decoration-day-1
