For release on: March 14, 2014 For more information contact: Robert Hudson, Fire Chief (281) 363-3473 [email protected] SOUTH MONTGOMERY COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT- MONTGOMERY COUNTY ESD #8 RECEIVES HIGHEST ISO RATING – CLASS 1 The South Montgomery County Fire Department Announces: The Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office and Insurance Services Office (ISO) Class 1 Presentation The Montgomery County Emergency Services District No. 8 - South Montgomery County Fire Department will officially receive its Class 1 Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating during a presentation at the City of Oak Ridge North City Hall scheduled for March 19, at 6:00 p.m. The Oak Ridge North City Hall is at 27424 Robinson Road, Conroe, TX. 77385, located just west of the intersection of Robinson Road and Hanna Roads. The presentation will be made by representatives from the Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Insurance Services Office (ISO), a leading supplier of statistical, underwriting, and actuarial information for the property/casualty insurance industry. The community is invited to attend. The ISO rating is used to measure the quality and effectiveness of fire protection in a community. Additionally, it allows residential and commercial property owners the opportunity to obtain the best possible insurance rates. “This superior rating reflects the hard work and dedication of the men and women of the Montgomery County ESD 8 Fire Department to maintain such high standards of fire protection for the residents of this community. Earning this rating is something to be extremely proud of, and I applaud everyone responsible,” said Jesse James Williams of the Texas Department of Insurance. With this classification, Montgomery County Emergency Services District No. 8 is listed among an elite group of departments as it is one of only 56 to achieve the Class 1 rating in the United States. Only 20 departments in Texas have been awarded a Class 1 rating. ESD No. 8 is the first Montgomery County based fire department to receive a Class 1 rating. Additionally, ESD No. 8 is the first emergency services district in the State of Texas to receive a Class 1 rating. “Earning a Class 1 rating is a tremendous accomplishment for the Montgomery County Emergency Services District No. 8 and will have a lasting positive effect on our commercial property owners. Being one of only a few communities in the state to earn this classification, and creating the opportunity for companies to have lower insurance rates, positions the South Montgomery County area to become an even more attractive place to do business, said Jesse James Williams. As part of its evaluation, the ISO collects information on municipal fire-protection efforts in communities throughout the U.S. ISO’s Public Protection Classification (PPC) Program helps establish appropriate fire insurance premiums for residential and commercial properties and provides insurance companies with reliable, up-to-date information about a community’s fire protection services. The formal assessment process consisted of three major areas: • Fire department (staffing, equipment, training, and emergency response capabilities). • Water supply system (highlighting the water supply a community uses for fire suppression). • Fire alarm and communications system (which centers on facilities and support for handling and dispatching alarms). The Insurance Service Office evaluation of the fire department accounts for 50 percent of the rating; while water supply accounts for 40 percent and radio communication systems accounts for the final 10 percent. The Insurance Service Office commended Montgomery County Officials for adapting to the demands of a changing environment and congratulated the ESD No. 8 Commissioners for their commitment to serve the needs of the community’s property owners and residents. “A Class 1 rating is not easy to earn,” said Montgomery County ESD No. 8 Fire Chief Robert Hudson. “To do so takes a collective effort by so many associated with the Emergency Services District, and the community. Because of upgrades to our staffing levels, communication operations, water systems, facilities and training, we were able to maximize our rating from the Class 5/9/10 that was in place in 2009 to the best possible Class 1. Many of these improvements were possible through the community’s support of the one cent sales tax approved in May 2011. These funds are being used to provide emergency services to the District, and I want to thank the community for their support, which allowed us to achieve this rating.” About the ISO The Insurance Service Office (ISO) is a New York-based advisory organization that serves the property and casualty insurance industry by providing inspection services, insurance coverage development and statistical services. ISO has Texas offices in Dallas and Austin.
