For some reason, this reminds me of the short story by American writer Edward Everett Hale The Man Without a Country about an American Army lieutenant Philip Nolan in the 19th Century who renounced his country during a trial for treason and was consequently sentenced to spend the rest of his days at sea without so much as a word of news about the United States. Now-a-days, Gitmo has a few vacancies for this service rather than wasting space on a busy US Navy ship.
