Dont treat it as a serious retrospective look. Read it as a part of a continuing attempt to manipulate the publics understanding of events—from that point of view it has some evidentiary utility. A single example will suffice to let future readers understand just how profoundly misleading the entire piece is; consider the way the crucial moment that decided Coopers fate is treated; the election: NOV. 4 — The long-awaited election to decide LPSB’s future for the next five years arrives. The day ends with the election of seven new school board members; voters send only two incumbents, Chassion and Tommy Angelle, back to the board in 2015. Thats so misleading as to be dishonest. Heres rewording that is a lot closer to the truth; the information in brackets were left out in an attempt to rewrite the meaning of events. NOV. 4 — The long-awaited election to decide LPSB’s future for the next five years arrives. The day ends with the election of seven new school board members, [5 of whom were backed by the teachers union and Cooper opponents. 3 Chamber/Cooper-endorsed candidates won.]; [All of the incumbent allies of Cooper lost and] voters send only two incumbents [—Cooper opponents] , Chassion and Tommy Angelle, back to the board in 2015. [It amounted to a public repudiation of Cooper and paved the way for his subsequent dismissal.] Oh, and in the district 1 race that was decided a month later Mary Morrison, who was endorsed by the teachers union in the runoff won. The whole article follows the same deceptive pattern.
