For the remaining 61 % Modi has won the elections with a landslide margin. His BJP got 282 seats and the NDA 337 seats. This is unprecedented and a record in the history of Indian elections. The credit for this victory definitely goes to Mr. Modi and his superb campaign. Mr. Modi’s had run his campaign like a Presidential election asking citizens to vote directly for him. He had repeatedly said that any vote for the ‘lotus’ symbol will be a direct vote for him as the PM. All other political parties outside the NDA had combined to stop Mr. Modi from becoming the PM. The phenomenal increase in the number of seats for the BJP and NDA is a reflection of people’s mandate for Modi to become the PM. However, looking deeper, one finds that BJP got 31 % of the votes polled. So 69 % of people who voted, did not vote for the BJP. The NDA got 39 % of the votes polled, but the 8 % non-BJP NDA votes were perhaps more for the regional leadership like the Shiv Sena, TDP, SAD, etc. However, even if one considers 100 % of those votes were for Mr. Modi as PM, the remaining 61 % votes were still against him becoming the PM. Considering a multiple party scenario, the 61 % votes were divided amongst different parties, which could not reach the threshold level in different constituencies for any one particular candidate winning the seat to stop Mr. Modi from becoming the PM. If one considers the fact that the only 66 % of the electorate voted, it means that BJP received only 20 % of the national votes and the NDA received only 26 %. However, this is not to undermine the unprecedented victory that Mr. Modi has got, but to remind him that 61 % of the people who voted, did not actually vote for him to become the PM. They have several fears in their minds, and for them, Mr. Modi’s becoming the PM was a nightmare. Now that he is going to be the PM, he needs to embrace them all. He will be the Prime Minister of India, not the Prime Minister of BJP or NDA. He will have to take care of the entire nation, and not only those who supported him. Only then will he be considered a “Statesman”. Similarly, the remaining 61 % need also to now support Mr. Modi as the PM. They need to forget their ideological differences, fears and animosity in the election campaign, and strengthen the hands of Mr. Modi to deliver on improved governance and economic development of the country. The 39 % who voted for Mr. Modi as the PM have voted for their “Hope” for a better future. The enormous victory of Mr. Modi is due to that “Hope” of people. He now has a challenging task of meeting their hopes. Mr. Modi needs to especially recognize that a sizeable chunk of his victory is due to the unconditional support he got from the youth across the caste, religion and regional barriers in the hope for getting “Jobs”. Therefore, Mr. Modi’s first job should be to focus on providing jobs to the unemployed youth. And he will have to deliver it fast. His performance in the first few months will be judged by what steps he takes to generate more job opportunities and how many of unemployed youth actually get jobs. Any delays in fulfilling this hope will overturn the present optimism. I just wish that the hopes and dreams of his supporters come true, and the fears and nightmares of those who opposed him do not come true! .
