For those wishing to help the efforts in the Philippines -- here are a few events and avenues recommended by someone with very strong ties to the community. Many people have asked how best they can support the people in the Philippines who have been affected so I just want to list a few great things/organisations that are available for your support: 1. The ANU Filipino Association has a number of fundraising efforts including: a. ANUFA Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda online fundraising campaign (ongoing). In just over three days, the ANU students association, ANUFA, has raised more than $7000 through their online fundraising appeal, all proceeds going to the Australian Red Cross. Every additional cent counts; if you have not yet done so, please follow the link below or share with your friends and colleagues redcrossfundraising.org.au/anufa2013 b. LFT/ PSG/ ANUFA Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings Warehouse (15 November, 13 December). Come to Bunnings Warehouse in Fyshwick *tomorrow*, Friday, 15 November, between 10 am - 4 pm. Well have an ever-popular Sausage Sizzle to raise funds to benefit the Typhoon survivors. Some PSG members will be there in partnership with the Learning Filipino Together (school) and the ANUFA. Come and buy a sausage or to cheer on the volunteers who will be crewing the Sizzle tent. Let your friends know as well so they can buy from us before or after shopping at Bunnings! (please see flyer attached to this email). Although the Bunnings Sizzle Tent is booked solid for three months, theyve kindly given us another slot for our fundraising campaign and we get to do this again on Friday, 13 December. We will need more volunteers for that, so please let me know if youre interested to be part of the roster. c. Ang Paglilitis ni Andres Bonifacio (29 November). Come to the ANU Manning-Clarke Theatre on Friday, 29 November, at 6 pm, for the screening of the Mario OHara film, Ang Paglilitis ni Andres Bonifacio (The Trial of Andres Bonifacio). Originally meant to be a free film showing sponsored by ANUFA and the Philippine Embassy to celebrate Bonifacio Day (30 November), it will now be another Typhoon Haiyan fundraising event. Tickets are $5 at the door (and you can donate more). 2. Transit Bar, along with supportive Canberra bands and DJs, has organised a fundraising event for Saturday November 16. All proceeds from the door will be donated directly to CARE Australia and its local partner organisations. Perfectly unobtrusive donation buckets will be strategically placed around the bar if you care to donate more. Transit Bar will also match dollar for dollar any donations made on the evening (and, yes, that includes money made at the door). Entry will be $10 at the door, which open at 8pm. Bands will start from 8pm, and DJs from 11.30pm. Set times will be available as soon as possible - come in and check out some great talent! Confirmed acts include: MOOCHERS INC, THE WANNINASHVILLES, SEMANTIX, ACTIVATE JETPACK ...and more to come. 3. I have been asked who the best organisations are to donate to, and although there are many relief organisations who have arrived in the Philippines, my personal donations have gone to the Philippine Red Cross who have good capability in country and will require as much support as possible given that they are also responding to humanitarian needs in Bohol (recent earthquake) and Zamboanga (uprising/conflict). You can donate via their website if you have a PayPal account redcross.org.ph/donate. A link to ANUFA’s appeal for Australian Red Cross is also above.
