For years, I lived married without children. On Christmas as a couple, we rarely celebrated and alone in the city, we didnt invite many guests. Instead I would shop for children related to me and fill the parlor with the gifts costing a couple hundred dollars to send every year to different locations. For me, it was a way of helping working struggling parents and allowing myself some enjoyment of the holidays. Today, I do not buy a single gift. Why? On one phone call after receiving gifts to my sisters home, she requested we only buy one gift and stop the gift giving I had been engaging in. On a second phone call, my sister requested that the gifts be more expensive so she agreed we should only buy one gift and make sure it is a valuable gift. On a third highly charged call from a sister in law, she screamed you always outdo everyone! On a fourth call from a distant Jewish relative, whom didnt usually give gifts, gave me a gift and I had not foreseen this generosity and had no gift to give in return, screamed, She got nothing and see if she will ever do that again. On a fifth call, I niece informed me a year later, they finally found the package under the snow a year later. Go figure.
