Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, . . . Philippians 3:13 I believe there is a reason that the rearview mirror is smaller than the windshield in our vehicles. The rearview mirror is meant to be glanced at while the windshield is meant to have more of our attention. If we are to be safe, if we are to get where we need to go, if we want to avoid major accidents then we must look ahead more than we look behind. Much the same applies to life. It is easy to get off track in life when we spend too much time looking back at the road we have traveled. There is nothing wrong with a little glance back every now and then, but if we let the pains of our past define us or the victories of our past distract us then we will miss the next turn that the Lord has in store for us. The apostle Paul knew full well what it meant to look ahead and keep his eyes on the road. When Paul looked in the rearview mirror he saw in himself a religious leader, but one who knew not God. He saw a prideful man, an arrogant man, an angry man who thought the only good Christians was a dead Christian. When Paul looked in the rearview mirror he saw a man with a completely different identity, even a different name. This is why Paul was so insistent that he look ahead. He knew that the promises of God lie ahead and that the grace of God paves new roads. He knew that he could not change what had happened, but by the grace of God he could confidently embrace what was going to happen under the powerful hand of the Almighty. Paul only glanced back long enough to be reminded that God can change a life and he understood that this new life must now move on to the glory of God. So it must be with all of us. As we enter a new year, we may take a few days to glance into the rearview mirror. Our hearts may be pricked with pains or they may be tempted with pride. We may see the plight of the enemy or we may see the faithfulness of God, but we must not linger there. No - we must focus ahead more than we do behind . There is too much good awaiting us through the windshield.
