Frameline Day 6 Violette Leduc In Pursuit Of Love: A very good - TopicsExpress

Frameline Day 6 Violette Leduc In Pursuit Of Love: A very good documentary, which helped put into context the feature film we saw the night before. Something Must Break: I ended up liking this film but it seemed like a short that was stretched out with lots of artistic photography. Mentor: this was a powerful documentary (after the sound problems were fixed) about bullying. As an audience it was frustrating to learn that the town of Mentor never took any action or responsibility for the bullying that led to at least 4 suicides. And even more shocking to learn (in the Q&A) that the director herself got threats just for making the film. Id say lets boycott Ohio but I think Ive already been doing that for the last 57 years To Be Takei: With Jennifer Kroot and Bill Weber involved we knew this was going to be a good film. The true gift of the movie is the time we get to spend with Brad Takei, he is the perfect partner (and foil) for George. The only thing Brad needs to learn is that on opening night (in this case for the musical Allegiance) when your husband asks you what you thought of the play, he is looking for praise, not an honest opinion. (It took me a while to teach this to all my husbands) Around The Block: Every cliche in the cannon. A young idealistic teacher has her underprivileged students put on a production of Hamlet. The young man cast in the lead struggles with a home life that mirrors the plot of the play. After avenging his incarcerated father the police come to arrest him, but they are persuaded to stand in the wings and let him complete his performance, which brings tears to their eyes as the take him away in their squad car. This being Frameline we assume that the young actor will also discover that it is not Ophelia he loves but Laertes--but no! Heres the twist! Its the Drama Teacher who discovers shes gay. This subplot (or should I say sub blip) is so inconsequential, that it could be excised without changing the movie at all. But even with all that, I kinda liked the film.
