Friday March 7, 2014 : You can find it at your library! Greetings from Mr. Lee “I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.”—Jorge Luis Borges When I first went to college I recall walking into the university’s library and being overwhelmed by the immensity of it all. Thousands upon thousands of books, each with a story to tell, insights to share, knowledge to convey. The mind-blowing possibilities, of the gardens of forking paths that a diversionary day, week, month, year, life!, could bring to the seeker of knowledge, if only the right synthesis and focus were to be applied, to be guided and edited to avoid the intellectual cul-de-sacs. A world of knowledge at your fingertips. Possibilities, indeed! Maddening possibilities and quickly assessed as a major distraction if I was to pursue a focused curriculum as proscribed by the dean of my college. Life happened in between: school, jobs & family intervened. Less time for reflective thought and with what precious time was left, I used it for recreational reading, mostly with books in my own personal library which I could read at my pace and leisure, dog-earing, staining with abundant coffee and so on. From time to time, however, I have found the need to research a topic: fixing something, dealing with aging parents, health and diet related topics, contemporary economics, social issues, etc. Real world, practical stuff. I have learned that the dusty book on the shelf is still there, waiting for me if and when I need it, whether immediately when I go to the library, virtually as I go online, or through the interlibrary loan process. What an incredible FREE resource to have! Here at the Summit County Library, in addition to all the wonderful fiction collections, we have biographical and non-fiction collections for all ages to help answer some of those questions that come up along the way. We can do interlibrary loans for materials we don’t have in our collection and make those available to you. Next time you are visiting us, whether browsing or with a specific request in mind, please don’t hesitate to ask us if there is something you seek and we will help you find it!
