Friday afternoon my son treated the old man, taking me to see the X-cellent film X-Men: Days of Future Past. If you are a fan of the first two films, you are really going to enjoy this! Yes, Hugh Jackman reprises his role as the dynamic Wolverine and franchise stalwarts Halle Berry (Storm) Patrick Stewart (Professor X) Ian McKellan (Magneto) among others, are back. Ellen Page also returns as Kitty Pryde. Too, the always endearing Jennifer Lawrence takes over the role of blue skinned shapeshifter Mystique from Rebecca Romijn. From among the multitude of X-Men past--and future--marking this day for their first celluloid appearance: Colossus, Blink, Warpath, Sunfire and one of my personal favorites, Bishop. Director Bryan Singer did a marvelous job, IMO, artfully juggling the many top flight actors through scenes rich in dialogue which he used to set up the exciting action sequences. Kudos to Mr Singer. By the way, what a powerhouse collection of female acting talent! Halle Berry has won an Academy Award for Best Actress, Jennifer Lawrence won the Award for Best Supporting Actress and Ellen Page was nominated for the same. The phrase It doesnt get any better than this is tired and hackneyed yet, for this instance, it really is an apt description. For those unfamiliar, DOFP is widely regarded as perhaps the greatest of all X-Men story lines. Yet there is always the potential for great disappointment when adapting a tale as much loved as this. All too often the transition from print to film leaves a tremendous amount to be desired. That is not the case here as I found the movie to be highly enjoyable and the adaptation true to original comic, as I recall. Plus, if you stick around through the seemingly endless credits, you will be rewarded with a short preview which sets up whats to come in the next installment of the series. Just enough to arouse anticipation. X-Men: Days of Future Past continues what is turning out to be a gratifyingly profitable summer for Marvel by joining Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as genuinely entertaining efforts. With August comes Marvels next offering: the heretofore little known The Guardians of the Galaxy featuring an all star cast which includes Vin Diesel, Glen Close, Benecio Del Toro, WWE Superstar Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana and the delightful Karen Gillan, best known for her portrayal of the audacious Amelia (Amy) Pond the past three seasons on BBCs spectacular Doctor Who. Many thanks to my wonderful son for the Happy Friday outing which also included a tasty lunch of pizza and cheesy breadsticks afterward. I am so proud of the man you have become. You are the best son a dad could ever possibly want. And not just cause you took me to the movies and lunch. But it helps. :^) I love you.
