Friday night karaoke at the DEN in Sunbury is almost always a - TopicsExpress

Friday night karaoke at the DEN in Sunbury is almost always a crazy packed affair with a zillion singers and enough mayhem to satisfy any fool follower. But last night it was a rather laid back subdued bunch that descended on the quaint little bar with the wonderful non-smoking policy that keeps it right near the top of my all time favorite places to warble my heart out. Not to worry as I have often stated, it just means more time to squeeze in an extra song or two for yours truly. So Eddie and I [yes SHE went along and willingly I might add] ordered the fish sandwich special and a pitcher of iced tea and settled in our seats for the night. Right on cue Mr. Miller started the night with a new to him song to commemorate the birthday of Eddie Money. I was next up and I started with an old Gene Pitney song from the sixties. HALF HEAVEN, HALF HEARTACHE. Song number two was one from way back as well. It was originally released by Miss Timi Yuro and was titled simply HURT. Elvis also did a more than credible version of it as well. Then it was fun to sit and see just what makes Midnite Jam so very entertaining. Howie and Rick Campbell playing flawless air guitar while covering other peoples songs. The whole stage explodes with color and frivolity with Jume Campbell running around getting pictures of it all with Howies camera. A real donnybrook ensued and was pure magic to watch. Another unexpected treat for us all was the presence of a new college graduate now serving as an apprentice down in or near Reading. Mr. Kyle Ashenfelder is always a treat to both hear and see. His air guitar work was inspired by the master Rick Campbell and he learned his craft well indeed. For my third song I went back to both the sixties as well as Gene Pitney as I sang his classic I MUST BE SEEING THINGS. As I handed in my next batch of songs leading off with a new to me tune by Firefall, Howie noticed the title-JUST REMEMBER I LOVE YOU- and coyishly said “ Yes I know that you do “. Lol. He is truly the man and anybody who would aspire to be a popular DJ had better wear track shoes just to hope to keep up with him as he goes through his paces. By now it was getting late and the witching hour of one a.m. loomed straight ahead. My wife and I had a communication problem on when I was ready to leave and I stayed because Howie said that there were only two more singers so I would get in one more song. I mean It is why I even go out in the first place. I apologized to Eddie and went up to cover probably my very best song by Mr. Tom Jones. I’LL NEVER FALL IN LOVE AGAIN is just one of those songs that I have been able to do from the very beginning of my “ career “ and it flows out effortlessly. My night was complete and we made plans for the ensuing caravan to Bubbas in Gowen City on Saturday night. Rob Wheary is the DJ and is starting the festivities at an earlier time of 9:00 p.m. So come on out and listen to some great songs and grab a bite to eat from their kitchen as well
